Don King was formed as a result of a phone call from Thurston Moore asking me if I could put something together to play at the Noisefest he was organizing at the White Columns gallery in 1981. I enlisted China, now known as Lucy Hamilton, and Duncan Lindsay and we did the show as a more or less acoustic trio. I alternated trumpet and bass, Lucy guitar and bass clarinet and Duncan played a drum set. We decided to continue under the name Don King which was actually the pseudonym Lucy used for that show. As a trio we played the club scene in NY for awhile, which then included the lofts and basements of the improv scene, did a short tour of Italy, and released a cassette on Hyrax. Around 84 we decided to expand rhythmically with Arto Lindsay and Toni Noguiera on percussion. With this formation we recorded the One-Two Punch Lp on Doublevision, an English label sponsored by Cabaret Voltaire. Later, for a time in 86, we did shows as a duo, Lucy and I, with the inclusion of electronics. This was when I started using delay and effects pedals with the trumpet. But by 87 we expanded again, getting together with Toni Maimone, once bass player of Pere Ubu, and a fantastic drummer named Bill Perry. With them we recorded four songs which have now finally been released on the Don King collection on Atavistic. Also reissued on this collection is the One Two Punch Lp, but unfortunately there was a mistake in the remastering and the first song, Revelry, an original Clint Ruin remix, was mastered from vinyl at 33 rpm instead of 45, this being a label printing mistake on the original vinyl issue. Hopefully a future edition will stand corrected.
